The Capuchins Friars Accept a New Ministry in Cleveland

With the approval of Cleveland Bishop Edward Malesic and Capuchin Provincial Minister Br. Tom Betz, OFM Cap, Br. Phil Bernier, OFM Cap, has been assigned as Parochial Vicar of St. Malachi Parish, 2459 Washington Ave. in Cleveland.

The parish was founded in 1865 to care for the spiritual needs of the then predominantly Irish “Old Angle” neighborhood around Detroit Ave. and West 25th St. Br. Phil will assist parish administrator Fr. Michael Gurnick with regular parish responsibilities and explore possibilities to expand and invigorate the parish’s proud history to social outreach to Cleveland’s near westside.

This assignment is effective immediately and is the Capuchin’s first ministerial assignment on Cleveland’s westside since their arrival in the diocese in 1978.

Let Us Gather Together in Prayer to Give Thanks!

The Capuchin Friars of Cleveland invite you share with us in the Eucharist, which itself means “thanksgiving,” and celebrate God’s  bountiful blessings upon each of us and upon our nation this Thanksgiving. Please feel free to bring paper products or canned goods to be distributed to those in need in our local communities.

New Young Adult Ministry at St. Peter’s

In collaboration with diocesan Vicar for Evangelization and the Young Adult Ministry Office, St. Peter’s has been chosen to serve as the “hub” or central location for a new experience of ministry for young Catholic adults in downtown and beyond. Beginning on October 4th, the Feast of St. Francis, six days of the week will offer a variety of social, spiritual, and service activities that will help connect young adults to our faith, to one another, and to help serve the needs of our community. Our ministry will follow this plan each week:

  • Sunday:   Mass @ 7:00PM in St. Peter Church (E. 17th and Superior).
  • Monday:  Mass @ 12:15PM in the church chapel.
  • Tuesday:  CSU Newman Night presentation @ 7:00PM in the Parish House (1533 E. 17th St.).
  • Wednesday: Bible Study @ 7:00PM in the Parish House.
  • Thursday:  Adoration and Reconciliation @ 7:00PM in St. Peter Church.
  • Friday:  Pray in your own way today!
  • Saturday:  Morning Service Projects.

This is a new beginning; as the ministry grows, we will continue to listen to your hopes and needs and find ways to address them, incorporating the best gifts our society offers while always remaining true to our Catholic faith.  Join us when you can “@7on17th”…and bring a friend or two!

St. Francis Day Blessing of the Animals

To honor St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan Order, friend of all creatures and the patron saint of ecology, St. Peter’s Parish (1533 E. 17th St.) is hosting a traditional Blessing of the Animals at the church on Monday evening, October 4th at 7:00pm.  We will gather where best on property, depending on the weather and the size of the gather. Cider and “treats” will be available; donations will be accepted to support PAWS Ohio and their mission of caring for animals in need. All are welcome!

St. Agnes Our Lady of Fatima Dedicate New Gym

On August 28th, 2021 – St. Agnes/Our Lady of Fatima Parish will celebrate the blessing and dedication of its new gym and parish hall in a prayer service led by Bishop Edward Malesic.
